MACKINAC ISLAND
I live on in a tiny island called Mackinac Island. You
pronounced it “MAC-en-aw”, and it means “big turtle”. Mackinac Island is on
Lake Huron. A lot of really rich tourist used to come here. Only 500 people live here. Cars are not allowed.
People still walk or ride bikes everywhere, or they rent horse-drawn carriages.
In fact, my school “bus” is a horse and buggy!.
We call tourist “fudgies” because they always come
here and buy fudge. I like chocolate fudge, but I don`t eat as much as the
tourist.
I don`t always feel lucky. It`s hard to remember the
ferry and plane schedules to St. Ignace on the mainland. I used to ride in own
snowmobile to St. Ignace, but it took a long time and it was very cold.
My best friend Charlie and I complain about boys here.
There are just 100 people in my school, my entire grade is only four girls and
two boys. I can`t wait to go to the college and see lots of people every day
and maybe get my driver`s license.
